The Great Western Arcade- present day

Birmingham’s Victorian shopping arcade.

Following on from my last vintage postcard blog post about the Great Western Arcade (Vintage Postcard #2) I thought I should do an update and post some piccies of what the arcade looks like today. Below are a selection of photographs which show the recent refurb of the arcade and I think you’ll agree it has retained plenty of its Victorian elegance and charm.

The turquoise and white paintwork brings some vibrancy and life to the interior. Details are highlighted in gold. I think the picture above shows the position of where the original central glass dome would have been.

Decorative plaster mouldings adorn the balconies and upper level with a series of arched windows running along with pilasters in-between.

There are a few interesting independent shops which are worth a visit such as the Handmade Boutique and Ethos jewellery along with high street names and eateries.
